Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of tasks in the day-to-day operation,

maintenance and patrol of the County Parks and related facilities. Work involves supervising
staff, creating and managing park activities, issuing park permits, ensuring compliance with
park rules and regulations by park users, assisting individuals and groups using parks, and
maintaining park property, equipment and buildings. Employee must exercise initiative and
independent judgment in ensuring safety and security of parks. Employee must also exercise
tact and courtesy in frequent contact with park patrons and the general public. Reports to the
Park Superintendent.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Plans, schedules, participates in, and inspects the work of full-time and part-time staff,
volunteers and court appointed workers engaged in activities related to the operation and
maintenance of County parks; prepares daily and weekly work assignments; evaluates staff
performance; resolves conflicts; oversees training program for Park Rangers and Park Aides;
maintains training records; and ensures work assignments and training are completed in a
timely manner.
2. Plans, develops and implements a comprehensive offering of programs for the public at all
parks based on community interests and desires; leads programs when applicable; solicits
instructors and speakers; trains to staff to be able to conduct programs; arranges media
coverage for programs and events; evaluates success of park programs. Attends programmer
meetings for coordination of activity schedules.

3. Performs and/or supervises general maintenance at Beaverdam Park and safety inspection of
park grounds, equipment and facilities; processes work orders for more complicated
maintenance needs; assists with maintenance and repairs to public boat landings as directed;
maintains safety and inspection records; tracks repairs and ensures completion of work;
monitors inventories of supplies and equipment; purchases items and/or make
recommendations for purchases.
4. Register individuals and groups for park activities; collects fees for equipment and facility
rentals, hunting and fishing licenses, and boat and canoe permits; operates a cash register;
balances daily receipts, and prepares routine financial reports.
5. Performs a variety of duties associated with the daily custodial maintenance of park areas
and facilities; collects debris in parks, athletic fields, floral display areas, surrounding areas,
parking lots, and transports to convenience centers and dumpster sites.
6. Patrols the park and related facilities to enforce regulations, ensures security and public
safety; maintains order and assists the public in the use of the facilities; responds to minor
emergencies; contacts emergency medical personnel in serious situations.

7. Opens and closes parks and buildings as necessary; updates and prints weekly rental and
park usage schedule; generates reservation reports; ensures facilities are properly prepared;
maintains inventories and orders stock of custodial supplies and sale items.
8. Assists with organizing and conducting special events for the parks and the County.
9. Assists with and implements park construction projects; assists in capital improvement
planning for parks; interacts with Director, Park Superintendent and other County personnel on
the development of parks.
10. Promotes good public relations with citizens using the park and recreation facilities;
instructs and advises park users in matters concerning flora, fauna and wildlife present in park
areas; weighs and identifies fish caught by park patrons; responds to questions on game and
fisheries laws.
11. Coordinates annual/biannual emergency training exercise with park staff, fire and rescue
squad volunteers and others as appropriate.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by college course work in a related field.
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in park operations and programming, and two years of
supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides
the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid driver's license; possess and maintain a driving record that meets
established Gloucester County Driving Standards.
Possession of, and ability to maintain, CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
Completion of National Association of State Boating Law Administrator approved boat-handling
course.
Completion of Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services approved child
protection training/coursework for mandated reporters of child maltreatment.

Pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination; employee may be subject to
subsequent physical examinations to ensure he/she meets job-related physical requirements.
