The hiring salary for this position will be $47,545 +/- DOQ. 
Under general supervision, manages a comprehensive program of tourism development and promotion for Gloucester County. Employee plans, develops, coordinates and implements programs to promote public awareness and enhance visitation to the County.  Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with volunteers, employees, business representatives, agency representatives, and the general public.  Employee reports to the Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

Examples of Duties

  1. Develops and implements a tourism marketing plan for Gloucester County.  Creates and/or directs the creation of marketing media, including brochures, posters, flyers, print and web advertisements, and social media.  Oversees creative message development, and maintains and periodically updates County's Tourism website and social media accounts.
  2. Plans new research-based advertising strategies for current and subsequent years to increase public awareness and visitation. Arranges distribution and placement of marketing items; routinely assesses inventory throughout sites for restocking or removal.  Selects and recommends placement and evaluates the effectiveness of distribution locations.
  3. Supervises the operation of the Gloucester County Visitor Center and Gift Shop.  Participates in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of volunteers and employees.  Oversees the selection, pricing, and inventory of merchandise to be sold at Visitor Center, including the recruitment of local artists/businesses for specialty merchandise.  Develops exhibits for Visitor Center and other court circle buildings to enhance overall visitor experience, as well as portable exhibits for special events.
  4. Prepares annual tourism budget; monitors revenue and expenditure reports; makes recommendations for advertising and merchandise expenditures; researches availability of and assists with grant applications; and prepares annual report for Board of Supervisors.
  5. Develops cooperative working relationships with business and other tourism representatives to share information in order to better promote Gloucester as a tourism destination.  Partners with lodging, restaurants, and specialty shop owners/managers to create special package deals; maintains a constant flow of useful and accurate information. 
  6. Serves as staff support for Tourism Advisory Committee and prepares meeting agendas; serves on Main Street Association Board and regional tourism committees.  Represents Gloucester County at tourism related workshops, seminars and meetings.
  7. Promotes tourism initiatives and makes presentations to local civic, business, historical, and cultural groups regarding Gloucester's tourism efforts and to solicit volunteers. 
  8. Develops, plans, coordinates, and manages new events to attract more out-of-town participants; composes press releases and programs for promotion of such events.  Researches and develops new tours and trails.  Organizes school and other group tours of historic buildings.
  9. Explore opportunities to expand tourism assets and information services.
  10. Responds to consumer inquiries via phone, mail, email and/or in person.  Prepares informational packets for group tours.  Provides up-to-date information for local event calendars, Virginia Tourism Corporation website, and other travel-related websites
  11. Provides training programs and familiarization trips for employees of tourism-related businesses (program development, speaker solicitation, development of training materials). 
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in marketing, public relations, tourism, or closely related field.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, public relations or tourism, and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.
