Description: Performs responsible technical work assisting with the care and improvement of public grounds, shrubs, trees and plants; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the City Horticulturist. Supervision may be exercised over maintenance personnel. Planting and maintaining planting beds, medians and parks; assisting with horticultural planning and design; assisting with the planting, transplanting, fertilizing, trimming, spraying, and general care of plants and trees in City parks and on City owned and maintained property. Designs, participates in and supervises the planting of flowers and shrubbery beds. Supervises the work of horticultural grounds crew and trains new employees in planting, spraying, pruning, and propagation of plants. Assists in the maintenance of athletic fields and irrigation systems. Makes tours of inspection to determine the condition of parks and other areas as to their need for horticulture maintenance care. Assists with the training of assigned staff, scheduling projects and purchasing supplies. Installs seasonal decorations. Assists in preparation of special events including registration processing, database/record keeping and event setup. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a community college or technical institute with major course work in horticulture, forestry or related field. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of pesticide applicator’s license. $26,558-$45,486 DOE.
